Before Harvest (Two Weeks)

Storage ID: _________________

Clean all equipment used to handle grain (Ex.: combines, carts, trucks, receiving pits/hoppers) thoroughly to remove old grain, trash, and debris that might contaminate the new crop. Use pressurized air/water.

___ /

___ /

___

Remove all “old” grain from inside storage bins. Use a shovel, broom and vacuum.

___ /

___ /

___

Check for holes and cracks in bin roofs and walls. Seal them to prevent leaks and entry of insects and rodents. (Look closely around ladders, roof vents and other openings.)

___ /

___ /

___

Treat the interior floor and bin walls with an approved insecticide.

___ /

___ /

___

Remove spilled grain around pits/hoppers, and storage bins.

___ /

___ /

___

Mow, spray or remove weeds/grass/vegetation around storage bins.

___ /

___ /

___

Treat the outside base of bins and the surrounding area with an approved insecticide.

___ /

___ /

___

Fumigate the space beneath the perforated bin flooring.

Warning!!! Fumigation is complicated and dangerous. If possible hire a commercial fumigator.

During Harvest/Binning

___ /

___ /

___

Clean grain.

___ /

___ /

___

Store wheat at 12.5% moisture or less. Moisture at storage time: __________________%

___ /

___ /

___

Consider applying a “Protectant” to the bulk grain mass. Do NOT apply to hot grain!!

___ /

___ /

___

Consider applying a “Cap Out” treatment on grain surface if a protectant is NOT used.

Post Binning

___ /

___ /

___

Use “Pitfall traps to monitor insect activity. Use three traps per bin. Check traps weekly in July and August. In colder months trap for four days each month.

___ /

___ /

___

Monitor wheat temperature and moisture.

___ /

___ /

___

Operate fans any time there is an opportunity to reduce temperature or humidity.

___ /

___ /

___

Have insects identified and classified as primary or secondary feeders.

___ /

___ /

___

Fumigate IF insects are numerous enough to result in a discount or you are planning to hold the gain into the next warm season.

___ /

___ /

___

In September run fans to cool wheat to near 60OF.

___ /

___ /

___

In October run fans to cool wheat to near 50OF.

___ /

___ /

___

In November run fans to cool wheat to near 40OF.

___ /

___ /

___

After cooling to near 40OF, seal fans with plastic to prevent air movement in the bin.

Insecticides and Fumigants Recommended for Wheat

Do NOT use malathion for any treatments. Most forms of malathion are no longer labeled for use, the product no longer provides adequate insect control, and overuse is resulting in high residue levels on some grains.

Empty Bins - applied to walls and floor: Reldan®, Storcide IITM, Tempo®. DO NOT APPLY Tempo® TO GRAIN! - OR - Diatomaceous Earth. Be sure your buyer will accept this treatment.

(For Update See: http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/PAT/recs/crop/recgrn/smgbin.htm)

Under Floor Fumigants - Chloro-pic®, (Can not currently be shipped), Methyl-Bromide, Phostoxin/Fumtoxin. Fumigants ARE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS!

(For Update See: http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/PAT/recs/crop/cleanout.htm)

Protectant - applied directly to the bulk grain: Storcide IITM and Reldan® are labeled.

(For Update See: http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/PAT/recs/crop/recgrn/smgpro.htm)

“Cap Out” treatments applied to the top 4 inches of grain. (Do not make this application if a protectant has been applied to the bulk grain: Reldan® for beetles or Reldan® or products containing Bacillus thuringiensis e.g. Dipel®, Javelin®, Sok-B.T®. etc. for Indian Meal Moth.

(For Update See: http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/PAT/recs/crop/recgrn/smgst.htm)

Bulk Grain Fumigants - Phostoxin® / Fumtoxin®

(For Update See: http://www.uky.edu/Agriculture/PAT/recs/crop/bulkfum.htm)
