At Siemer Milling, we’ve always believed that the future of agriculture depends on innovation, research, and strong partnerships. That’s why we’re incredibly excited to share news about our groundbreaking collaboration with the University of Illinois and the remarkable Dr. Jessica Rutkoski, whose cutting-edge wheat research is making headlines and driving real change for farmers across the Midwest.
Recognition for Excellence
We couldn’t be more proud to see Dr. Jessica Rutkoski, our research partner at the University of Illinois, recently featured on WCIA News. As a quantitative geneticist with an unwavering passion for applied breeding, Dr. Rutkoski brings the perfect combination of scientific expertise and practical focus to her work. Her approach centers on putting the principles and techniques of quantitative genetics and statistics to use in ways that accelerate genetic gain while benefiting both people and the environment.
Dr. Rutkoski’s June 6th small grains tour at the U of I South Farms perfectly showcased the innovative research that makes our partnership so valuable. Her work tackles the challenges that matter most to farmers: breeding for increased yields while avoiding disease and lodging, all while maintaining the quality and plant structure that make wheat truly profitable.
A Million-Dollar Commitment to Innovation
Our dedication to advancing wheat research goes beyond words. As our Vice President Secretary/Treasurer, Henry Siemer, shared in his recent WCIA News interview, we’ve pledged $1 million to launch wheat research programs at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, specifically supporting Dr. Rutkoski’s groundbreaking work. This investment reflects our unwavering commitment to innovation that benefits growers throughout our region.
This substantial investment demonstrates our belief that supporting world-class research today will yield tremendous benefits for farmers tomorrow. Dr. Rutkoski’s focus on making winter wheat more profitable for farmers in the North Central Midwest, promoting cropping system diversity, and advancing environmental sustainability goals aligns perfectly with our mission at Siemer Milling.
Supporting Illinois Agriculture’s Future
Beyond our research partnership, we’re also strong supporters of Illinois’ newly passed wheat check-off program, which will take effect January 1, 2026. This voluntary program, with its 1.5 cent per bushel assessment, will provide crucial funding for wheat research and help our entire industry adapt to changing markets. It represents exactly the kind of forward-thinking initiative that will strengthen Illinois wheat production for generations to come.
Building Bridges Since 1882
As Henry Siemer prepares to step into his role as President and CEO, our commitment to being the bridge between our farming partners and the future of wheat production remains stronger than ever. Since 1882, supporting Illinois agriculture has been at the heart of everything we do, and partnerships like the one we’ve forged with Dr. Rutkoski and the University of Illinois represent the next chapter in that proud tradition.
The future of wheat is indeed in great hands with researchers like Dr. Rutkoski leading the way, and we’re honored to support the innovative work that will help our farming partners thrive in an ever-evolving agricultural landscape.
